Ellen/Helen Philip was born in 1869 in New Zealand, the daughter of David Philip, a farmer, and Jane Elder.

She married James Bowman, a railway guard, on December 9th 1891 in the Palmerston parish. They had 2 children.

When Ellen signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Palmerston. They later lived in Lawrence and Dunedin before retiring to Christchurch.

Ellen died there on July 30th 1926 and James died in 1932. They are buried together in the Sydenham Cemetery.
