Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Helen Gardiner Cook was born on 8 October 1864 in Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland, daughter of James Cook, a tailor, and Margaret Patrick.

In 1879 Helen’s family arrived in Otago on the Napier.

Helen married James Cherry/Cherrie in 1881. James had also arrived on the Napier in 1879.

They had six children and lived in Nelson St, Caversham between 1893 and 1897. They later lived in Preston Crescent, Belleknowes.

This is where James died in 1942. Helen died at 97 Albany St on 21 December 1945, and is buried in the Southern Cemetery beside her husband.
