Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Ellen Annis was born in 1849 in Salford, Manchester, daughter of John Annis, a coachman, and Frances Eleanor Rowland.

Her early years were spent in Stockport and Manchester where she married, on 22 November 1874, John Currie, an iron moulder from Scotland.

They had three children in Lancashire before emigrating to Otago on the Marlborough in 1880. Six more children were born after their arrival.

The family were living in Nelson St between 1890 and 1896 then later at Haywood where John died in 1926, followed by Sarah Ellen on 6 July 1940.

They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
