Biography contributed by Clare Cramond

Ellen Conder Goldstone arrived in Wellington on the ship Douglas in June 1873. Ellen was 28-years-old when she landed in Wellington with her husband William Goldstone, 11 years her senior. He was a soldier and they came from Suffolk. They travelled with their five children, William aged 11, Louisa seven, Emily five, Ellen two and baby James, six months.

Ellen was born in Waterford Ireland and married William in 1863. After their arrival in New Zealand, they added to their family with the births of Rose in 1879, Hyacinth Victoria in 1883 and Charles in 1887. In the 1880s they were living in Frasertown where William was a storekeeper. He also moved into sheepfarming at Willow Farm, Frasertown by the 1890s.

Both Ellen and her daughter Ellen Martha (EM) Goldstone signed the Petition in 1893. Ellen was on the 1893 Electoral roll and gave her occupation as 'settler'.

The elder daughters, Louisa Kezia and Emily had married into the Couper family from the Hastings area, although there were also Coupers in Frasertown. Louisa Kezia Couper died from consumption when she was 31 in 1897. Her son, Ellen’s grandson William Robert died aged eight years in 1894, but his brother John Frederick died in 1969, aged 85 years.

William died in 1913 and Ellen in 1922. Their shared grave in the Wairoa Cemetery has an impressive monument.
