Ellen Bolton was born in New Zealand in 1865 – the daughter of William Bolton, a goods porter, and Ellen Barrow.

She married Charles Grey, a clerk, on 21 April 1886 at Milburn, South Otago.

They had two daughters and when Ellen signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Duncan St, Dunedin.

They later moved to Oamaru where Charles died in 1933, Ellen died on 8 July 1945. They are buried together in the Oamaru Cemetery.
