Ellen Hogan was living in Great King St, Dunedin when she signed the suffrage petition.
She was a domestic servant and she had recently arrived in the town from Wellington.
Ellen was unmarried and pregnant with twins – 'when the father, who was a carpenter, found the woman was in trouble, he left the colony and went to America.'
She was an inmate of the Female Refuge and the Salvation Army Rescue Home and in 'delicate health'.
Her daughters Ellen Norah and Mary Josephine were brought under the Industrial Schools Act and sent to St Mary’s School in Nelson.
Mary died in 1894 – Ellen’s future life is unknown.
