Ellen Jane Johnston was born in 1860 in New Zealand – the daughter of James Johnston, a farmer, and Elizabeth Brown. (See 106 Elizabeth Johnston)
When Ellen signed the suffrage petition she was living on the family farm 'Rosemains' at Pureua.
In later life she moved to Dunedin where she died on 3 March 1930, she is buried with her parents in the Romahapa Cemetery.
