Emily Dunn was born in 1866 in New Zealand – the daughter of George Dunn, a hawker, and Susannah Hemmett.
She spent her early years in Kaitangata and married John Burns, a shepherd, on 20 May 1886.
They had 11 children and when Emily signed the suffrage petition they were living in Kaitangata.
In later years they moved to Hampden in North Otago where John worked as a gardener.
He died in 1944 and Emily died in Oamaru on 19 January 1953, they are buried together in the Hampden Cemetery.
