Emily Georgina Menzies was born in 1845 in London – the daughter of Robert Marshall Menzies, an accountant, and Georgiana Moore, a professional dancer.
Her parents separated when she was a child and after her father’s death in 1863 her mother married William Ferdinand Fodor.
Sometime after William’s death in 1870 the family came to New Zealand where Emily married Michael Cleary Fleming in 1880.
Michael was a 66 year old produce merchant with a grown up family.
When Emily signed the suffrage petition they were living in St Clair, Dunedin.
Michael died in 1904 – he is buried in the Northern Cemetery.
Emily died on 30 May 1945 – she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
