Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ettie Dutton was born about 1873, probably in Stewart Island – the daughter of James Dutton, a sawmiller, and Jane. (See 137 Jane Dutton)

In the early 1870s the family moved from Stewart Island to the Owaka district where Ettie’s father opened the first saw mill in the district.

When Ettie signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Owaka.

She married Robert Brand, a school teacher, in 1912 – they lived at Purakanui, Tokoiti and Seacliff before Robert retired in 1932.

They then lived in Dunedin where Ettie died on 9 June 1933 and Robert died in 1939.

They are buried in the Owaka Cemetery.
