Grace Crawford Simpson McNaught was born on October 21st 1866 in Glasgow, Scotland, the daughter of William McNaught, a blacksmith, and Grace Simpson.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in the early 1870s and they settled in Oamaru.

In 1884 Grace became a pupil teacher in Oamaru. She was appointed head teacher of Blackstone Hill School in 1889.

In 1890 she became third assistant at Palmerston School, and she was living in Palmerston when she signed the suffrage petition.

Grace moved to Oamaru South School in 1896 where she stayed until she retired in 1922.

She died in Oamaru on June 5th 1951 and is buried with her family in the Oamaru Cemetery.
