Jane Brokenshire was born Jane Tippet in 1853, Newlyn, Cornwall, England to Caleb Tippet and Elizabeth Cook.  She was baptised on 6 January 1859, Newlyn East, Cornwall.  Residence was given as Nanhellan.  Caleb’s occupation was Miner.

Jane married Samuel Brokenshire on 27 September 1873 at Newlyn East, Cornwall, England.  Witnesses were Sophia Brokenshire and Philip Beer.  Samuel’s occupation was Husbandman.

Samuel, Jane and their daughter, Elizabeth A [Ann] age 2 came out to New Zealand on the ship Boyne arriving in Canterbury on 26 February 1879.

Jane and Samuel had a further six children born in New Zealand, John and Jane born in 1880; Samuel born in 1883; Bessie and Ellen Sophia born in 1885 and Henry born in 1890.

The 1893, 1896, 1911 Waitaki electoral rolls record the family living in Waimate.

In May 1921 Samuel retired after forty years’ service with the outdoor staff of the Waimate County Council.

Jane died on 1 February 1923 age 72 years and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Methodist section, Plot 000273.  Also buried in the same plot is John Brokenshire who died 10 December 1918.

Samuel Brokenshire died on 13 August 1937 and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Methodist section, Plot 000275.  Also buried in the same plot are Henry Brokenshire who died on 5 February 1959 and William Arthur Brokenshire who died on 18 June 2017.
