Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Drew was born about 1844 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of John Drew, a tailor, and Jane Morrison.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family about 1863 and they settled in Dunedin.

Jane’s daughter Lily was born in 1865 and the following year she married John Hartley.

Jane’s second daughter Jeanie was born in 1867.

John is possibly the John Hartley who was sentenced to four years hard labour for horse stealing in 1872 – his wife was living with her uncle, James Drew, in Tarradale, Victoria at the time of his arrest. John Hartley died in Dunedin Hospital in 1874 from heart disease.

Jane married William Morris, a quarryman at St Matthew’s Church, Dunedin on 17 August 1882 – they lived in Main Rd, North East Valley where Jane signed the suffrage petition.

William died in 1908 and Jane died on 2 December 1909 at her sister’s home. (See 137 Susannah Omand)

They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
