Janet Harvey was born on 24 November 1860 in Langholm, Dumfriesshire, Scotland – the daughter of George Harvey, a ploughman, and Mary Wilson.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1875 on the Invercargill and, on 19 December 1879, Janet married Archibald Crawford Farquhar in the Inchclutha/Stirling Parish.
The family farmed in the Owaka district and had 10 children, one who died in early childhood.
When Janet signed the suffrage petition the family were living near Purekireki in the Owaka Valley.
Archibald died in 1925 and Janet died at her home in Owaka on 14 April 1933, they are buried in the family grave in the Owaka Cemetery.
