Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Black (also known as Jeanie) was born about 1846 in Glasgow, Scotland. She arrived in New Zealand about 1874, possibly on the same ship as her future husband, the Invercargill.
Jeanie married Robert Stewart, a widower with three children whose wife had died on the journey to New Zealand, in 1875.
They had four daughters. When she signed the suffrage petition, the family was living in Argyle St, South Dunedin.
Robert died in 1919 and Jeanie died on 31 May 1934. They are buried in a family grave in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
