Jessie Murray Black was born on 20 May 1857 in Brechin, Angus, Scotland – the daughter of David Black, a labourer, and Jessie Wilson.
She came to New Zealand in the mid 1880s and she married John Pearson, an engine driver, on 6 July 1888 at Mt Pleasant, Lawrence.
They had four children and when Jessie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Clinton in South Otago.
After a few years in Oamaru the family moved to Dunedin where Jessie died on 17 April 1919 and John died in 1930.
They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
