Mary Jane Margaret Dempster was born about 1864.
She married John Vincent Cockerill, a horse breaker, on September 25th 1885 in the Palmerston parish.
They had 4 children before John died in 1889 due to being struck by a horse.
A subscription was started to help Mary and the children which raised over £70 in a week.
This money was used to buy a house and land for the family. Later in the year a concert was planned to raise more funds.
Mary signed the suffrage petition in Palmerston. She died in August 1895 and is buried with John in the Palmerston Cemetery.
