Mary Ann Goulton (nee Murfitt) was born in 1837 in Sutton St James, Lincolnshire to father Langworth and mother, Eliza. She married widower Benjamin GOULTON on 2 July 1862 in Mangonui, Northland and they settled in Kaeo. Mary Ann died aged 74 on 12 March 1911 in Blenheim, Marlborough (where son Charles was living), leaving four surviving children - one son and three daughters.
