Maria Bevins was born about 1850 in Staffordshire, England, the daughter of Thomas Bevins, an agricultural labourer, and Hannah Rushton.
She married Thomas Hodgetts on March 8th 1870 in Hixon, Staffordshire.
They had 2 children, both who died in infancy before they emigrated to Auckland in 1874 on the Assaye.
They had a further 5 children after their arrival. When Maria signed the suffrage petition they were living in Palmerston, north of Dunedin, and Thomas was working as a tailor.
He died in 1918 and Maria died on June 29th 1923. They are buried together in the Palmerston Cemetery.
