Her family emigrated to Otago on the Alpine in 1859 and settled in Caversham, Dunedin.

Margaret married Archibald Lawson, a hay and corn merchant,  on 9 June 1875 at Caversham, they had four children before Archibald died in October of 1882.

Their six-month-old son died the following month.

Margaret married George Scott in 1889, it is not known what happened to George.

Margaret ran a successful boarding house in Papatowai in the Catlins, she died on Christmas Eve 1937 and is buried in the Owaka Cemetery.
