Mary McLay was born in 1864 in New Zealand – the daughter of John McLay and Ellen Bray.
She married William Paterson Sloan, a farmer, on November 11th 1885 at the Waikouaiti Presbyterian Church.
They had 6 children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Palmerston.
When they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1935 they were living at Pleasant Valley near Palmerston.
Mary died at her home on January 26th 1939 and William died a week later.
They are buried together in the St John’s Cemetery, Waikouaiti.
