Mary Jane Henderson was born about 1858 in Ireland, the daughter of Walter Henderson, a bootmaker, and Anne Merrick.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1873 on the Michael Angelo and they settled in Waikouaiti, north of Dunedin.
Mary married Robert Templeton, a carpenter, on April 27th 1881 and they had three children.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Waikouaiti.
Robert died in 1941 and Mary died at her home the following year on December 25th. They are buried together in the St John’s Anglican Cemetery, Waikouaiti.
