Margaret (Maggie) Hare was born in 1849 in Armagh, Ireland, to Joseph and Maggie Hare (nee Metcalf). The Hare family came to New Zealand in 1865 on the “Lancashire Witch”. The following year mother Maggie died in childbirth and Joseph married a widow, Hannah Skinner, who also had a large family. Maggie married Thomas Major Lane in 1872 and they settled in Totara North. They had Margaret Frances (1873-1909), Joseph Solloway (1874-1941), Major William (1875-1945), Mary (1876-1904), Richard Ernest (1880-), Bertha Louise (1881-), Wilfred Henry (1884-1936), Leonard Metcalfe (1885-1953) and Clarence Lawson (1891-1959). Maggie was widowed in 1916 and she died in Totara North in 1927.

She is sister to Judith Ann Hare.
