Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:

On their way from England to settle in New Zealand in 1875, William and Maria Bliss altered their journey at Hobart, Tasmania, where their first child, Albert Edward Bliss was born. He was named after the husband of Queen Victoria. In 1883 the family, which later grew to two sons and three daughters, settled in Woodville, New Zealand, where William was the original town cobbler. Maria died in 1927, aged 83.
