Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Marion Patton was born in 1850 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of John Patton and Margaret White.

She married mine manager Thomas Watson on 20 January 1873 in Greymouth and they had nine children, one who died in infancy.

When Marion signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Crushington, near Reefton.

Marion’s sister in law also signed at Crushington. (See 251 Mary Patton)

Thomas died in 1927 and Marion died on 8 May 1931 – they are buried in the Reefton Cemetery.

Marion’s obituary said 'during her long residence, she had been the mother of Crushington, as in the early days she was the only woman there, and in every case of sickness or accident she was in charge of the nursing as well as being doctor, in the early days when medical men had to come from Greymouth.'
