Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Martha Ann McDowell was born about 1840 in County Antrim, Ireland – the daughter of Alexander McDowell, a farmer.

Martha had a daughter, also called Martha Ann, about 1861.

She married Glasgow Logan, also a farmer, on 23 August 1870 in Larne, County Antrim.

Glasgow had previously lived in Owaka where he had worked for a surveyor and where he had bought land. He had returned to Ireland, reportedly to marry Martha.

The family, accompanied by Martha’s sister, sailed for New Zealand soon after their marriage and settled in Owaka where they had a farm.

This is where their six children were born and where Martha signed the suffrage petition.

Glasgow died at their home in Owaka in 1916 and Martha died on 27 April 1924, they are buried in the Owaka Cemetery.
