Martha was born about 1842 in Bally Black, County Down, Ireland.
She married blacksmith William Martin. They had two children before they emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Wild Deer.
They settled in Waikouaiti where they had a further five children, and where Martha signed the suffrage petition.
William died in 1926 and Martha died at her home the following year on December 15th. They are buried together in the Waikouaiti Cemetery.
