Mary Ann Allen was born in 1839 in Oxhill, Warwickshire, England, the eldest child of William Allen, an agricultural labourer, and Mary Mullis.

She married Thomas Smith, a wheelwright and smith, about 1860. They had two daughters before they emigrated to Otago in 1863 on the Vicuna.

They settled in Waikouaiti, north of Dunedin, and had a further six children.

Mary signed the suffrage petition in Waikouaiti, she died at her home on May 25th 1911.

Thomas died the following year. They are buried in the family grave in the St John’s Anglican Cemetery, Waikouaiti.
