Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Sophia Pollard was born about 1860 in South Canterbury – the daughter of David Pollard & Emma Neal. (See 136 Emma Lumsden)

She married James Cochrane, a farmer, in 1884 and they had seven children.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Waimate.

James died at their daughter’s home in Morven in 1919 and Mary died on 14 March 1929 at another daughter’s home in Christchurch.

They are buried together in the Waimate Cemetery.
