Mary Elizabeth Bateman was born in 1869 in Weymouth, Dorset to Charles Bateman and Nancy Laurie Truscott Thomas. She was christened on 5 September 1869 in Portland, Dorset, England. Her father’s occupation is given as Prison Warden.

The Bateman family, which included four children, arrived in Canterbury on the ship Cardigan Castle on 6 January 1877.

After arriving in New Zealand the Bateman family lived in Waimate. 

The electoral roll for 1893 and 1896 records Mary living at home in Waimate. Her occupation is given as a Dressmaker. 

Mary died on 9 May 1903 aged 33 years. She is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Methodist section, Plot 0015ME000473. Also buried in this Plot is Frederick S (Fred Studwick) Bateman who died on 23 September 1892 aged five years.
