Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Clark McNutt was born about 1857 in Ireland – the daughter of William McNutt, a farmer, and Margaret McCrea. (See 137 Mrs McNutt)

She emigrated to Otago in 1874 with her family on the Mairi Bhan and she married James Friend on 16 June 1875 at Primrose Hill in Mornington, Dunedin.

They had six children, one who died in infancy, and by the mid 1880s the family were farming at Tahatika near Owaka where Mary signed the suffrage petition.

James died at their home in 1933 and Mary died in 1952, they are buried in the Owaka Cemetery.
