Mary Jane Evans was born about 1836. She married Cornelius Hurndell, a widower with two sons, in 1855 in Bedfordshire, England.
In 1857 they emigrated to Victoria, Australia on the Sabrina.
They had three sons in Victoria, two who died in infancy, before they sailed for Otago in the early 1860s.
hey settled in Palmerston, north of Dunedin, and they had a further six sons and one daughter. (See 131 Agnes Hurndell)
Cornelius, who worked as a labourer, was declared bankrupt in 1882 – they were still living in Palmerston when Mary signed the suffrage petition.
Cornelius died at their home in 1902 and Mary died in Dunedin on 18 May 1927, they are buried in the Palmerston Cemetery.
