Mary Jane Farquhar Benzie was born about 1825 in Scotland.
She came to New Zealand in the early 1860s and her daughter Georgina was born in 1868.
Mary married Alexander Horatio Burnes, a surfaceman for the railways, in 1870.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Waikouaiti, north of Dunedin.
In about 1900 they moved to Hawera where Alexander died in 1906.
Mary’s daughter Georgina died in February 1910 and Mary died one month later on March 6th. She is buried with Alexander and Georgina in the Hawera Cemetery.
