Mary Jane Hunter was born in New Zealand in 1866 the daughter of Alexander Hunter, an ironmonger, and Mary Syme. (See 99 Mary Hunter)
When Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Great King St, Dunedin.
She married John Carter, an ironmonger, at Knox Church, Dunedin on 24 December 1895 and they had four children.
They lived, at first, in Dunedin then moved to Wellington where John died in 1936, Mary then moved to Feilding, then Christchurch.
She died in Christchurch on 26 June 1953, she is buried with John in the Karori Cemetery, Wellington.
