Mary Ann Moore was born about 1844 in County Tyrone, Ireland.
She married Robert Steel, a shoemaker, on 2 January 1868 and they had three children, one who died in infancy.
In 1874 the family emigrated to Otago on the “Mairi Bhan”.
They settled in Dunedin where their next three children were born.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Main Rd, North East Valley.
Mary died on 1 July 1910 and Robert died the following year – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
