Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Frances Julia Lilly was born in 1866 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England – the daughter of Alfred Lilly, an engine smith, and Frances Jane Taylor.

In 1875 Frances emigrated to Canterbury with her family on the Lady Jocelyn. The family first lived near Timaru before settling in Dunedin. They moved to Christchurch in the early 1900s.

Frances died in Christchurch on 10 August 1942, and she is buried in the Linwood Cemetery. According to Frances’ obituary she “led a life of quiet usefulness” and was “well known for her practical interest in church music”.
