Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Not much is known about Charlotte Elizabeth Brookman –she was born about 1831 and was the wife of George Brookman.

She could possibly be the Charlotte Elizabeth Boweryem who married George Brookman in Hackney, London in 1874.

By 1876 Charlotte and George were running a boarding house in the Catlins district near Owaka.

The following year George was advertising for tenders for the erection of a shop and dwelling in Invercargill.

Whether the shop was built is unclear – in 1878 George opened the Owaka bakery.

He was declared insolvent in 1879 owing £108 8s 4d; assets £20.

In 1882 George was admitted to Seacliff Mental Hospital, he died in 1884 and is buried in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.

Charlotte continued to live in Owaka, she died in 1898 – her burial place is unknown.
