Ellen Farmer was born in Ireland about 1852.
She emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Tweed with her husband Robert Joseph Farmer, a smith, and their four young children.
The family settled in Dunedin and had a further five children.
When Ellen signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Macandrew Rd, South Dunedin.
Ellen died on 17 May 1895, she is buried with their son in the Northern Cemetery.
Robert re-married in 1899 and he died in 1909, he is buried in the Northern Cemetery.
