Biographical information provided by Helen Smith for the He Tohu exhibition:

Matilda Lucy Newing was born in 1862, the eldest daughter of Edward and Phoebe. in 1890 she married George John Silcock (1858-1941), a poultry farmer on the No 2 Line, Okoia, Whanganui. In 1898 their first child, Dorothy Clara, died aged one month. They had two more children: Arthur Wharrie (1901-1991) and Winnifred Madge (1901-). In 1915 the family left Okoia, and by 1919 they were living at 11 Stark St, Whanganui East, where George was listed as a fruit broker. They\ family stayed at this address, with unmarried daughter Winnifred, for the remainder of their lives. George died in 1941 and Matilda in 1944.
