Biographical information provided by Helen Smith for the He Tohu exhibition:

This is likely to be Grace Mackintosh (snr). She was born Grace McPhail in 1836 in Daviot, Inverness, Scotland, the daughter of Angus and Janet. She married John Keir Mackintosh in 1859 and had nine children in Scotland: Angus (1860 -1932), Jessie (1862-1864), Elizabeth (1865-1925), Grace (1868-1954), Alexander Donald (1869-1929), Jessie (1870-1917), John (1873-), Duncan (1876-1937) and Donald (1877-1897).

Sometime between 1881 and 1890 the family left Beachan Farm in Daviot and immigrated to New Zealand, settling on a farm in Okoia, Whanganui. It appears her daughters Grace and Jessie also signed the Peition.

When Grace Snr's husband died in 1904 they were living at Blythswood, No 1 Line, Whanganui. Grace died in 1912, aged 77.
