Biographical information provided by Flora Feltham for the He Tohu exhibition:

In 1893 dressmaker Rubina Margaret Hughson (nee Russell) lived on Hanover Street with her husband, a tea dealer named William, and their children. She was born on the Shetland Islands in 1850 and married William in Lerwick in 1875. The couple immigrated to New Zealand almost immediately and arrived aboard the Peter Denny on 12 November 1875. The couple had seven children: James, Robina, Mary, Robert, Frederice, Clementina, and Catherine. Rubina died on 21 May 1906, aged 55. She is buried in the Northern Cemetery with her husband, son James and daughter Robina.
