Map of Italian Theatre - war oral history programme

Soldiers of 2 NZEF landed in Taranto in October 1943. It took them 18 long months to trudge their way up to Trieste, arriving just as Italy capitulated in May 1945. The journey through Italy cost the New Zealanders nearly 9000 casualties. Battles included those at the Sangro River, Orsogna, Cassino, Arezzo and Faenza.
