i am looking for my grandfather who fought in the war. all i know about him is his last name is wallace and is buried i believe in the sala street cementary. please help me.

Dear Diana
The Ministry for Culture and Heritage looks after the graves of those who died during wartime, and there is no-one of the surname "Wallace" who died during wartime and who is buried at Sala Street cemetery. However, there may be Wallaces buried in the war veterans' section at Sala Street, and I am making enquiries on your behalf. Hopefully I will be able to get back to you by the end of this week about this. Regards,

HI MARGARET THE ONLY OTHER THING THAT I REMEMBER ABOUT MY GRANDFATHER IS THAT HE DIED IN 1960, AUGUST 3RD I BELIEVE. I KNOW HE IS BURIED ON THE OLDER SIDE OF THE CEMENTERY. AND MY GRANDMOTHER IS ON THE NEWER SIDE NOT FAR FROM THE MAIN ENTRANCE WAY, SHE PASSED AWAY IN 1974. ELSIE WALLACE WAS HER NAME. THANK- YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME. DIANA

Hi Diana - Margaret has asked me to let you know that she has been in touch with the sextant at Sala Street cemetery.

According to their records there are two people of the surname WALLACE who are buried in the Soldiers’ Section of that cemetery.

1. Robert Lindsay WALLACE, who died in 2000, aged 93.

2.James Ian Bruce WALLACE. Died Rotorua 21.4.1983, aged 63.

So neither of these sound like your grandfather.

Scottish born (island of Eday in Orkney) soldier Peter Tulloch served in France in New Zealand 1st Rifle Battalion and Army Ordnance Corps. He returned home to Rotorua after wounded inn 1917 and was awarded an Army pension. He died on 20th August 1921 from bowel cancer and has a military grave in Rotorua. Can anyone tell us if he is one of the 79 Great War names on the Rotorua War Memorial. If he is, we shall also add his name to the Eday War Memorial here in his home islands?
