This room once housed the Legislative Council, which was the second debating chamber in the New Zealand Parliament. Its members were appointed not elected, and the Legislative Council was abolished in 1951. The Legislative Council Chamber is now used for formal occasions, in particular for the formal state opening of Parliament by the Queen or the Queen's representative, the Governor-General. The room is also used for formal conferences and for large committee meetings and it is also used for musical performances held at Parliament.
