Jean Baptiste Francois Pompallier
Led by the charismatic Bishop Pompallier, the Catholic mission was backed by money and the Marist Order. It fuelled fears of French plans to annex New Zealand, but the French missionaries and mission stations remained heavily outnumbered by Protestants.
