I was able to answer my own question, with the help of a former pupil of the school, who showed me a photo his mother took of the Kohukohu school in 1940, which clearly shows the gate at the original school. That has resulted in a registration of the memorial gate (at the current school) for the NZ Historic Places Trust Register
This memorial pre-dates the current Kohukohu school it is now located at, which was opened in 1973. Was this memorial originally at the old school, built 1883, closed 1973, which is now an historic reserve higher up the hill?
