School children protesting, 1981 Springbok tour

The central theme of opposition to sporting contact with South Africa was opposition to apartheid. This protest took many forms and involved many parts of New Zealand society from church groups to trade unions and student bodies. School-age children were also involved, as shown here. On 8 August 1981 Daniel Morgan-Lynch and about 80 other college students opposed to apartheid marched to the South African Consulate before assembling at parliament.
