Information from Francis Vallance: 'These are the gates to Waltham Park. According to my father this used to be the main entrance to the park, now in the Council's infinite wisdom they built a swimming pool that blocks these gates for public access so they are hidden around the back of the pool. The pool has been there ever since I can remember so we can't blame the present council.'

As these images show the Waltham memorial was badly damaged in the Christchurch earthquake of 22 February 2011.
