Mary Herbert was born on 30 December 1859 in Currie, Edinburghshire, Scotland – the daughter of David Herbert, a farmer, and Jane Thomson.
She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in the 1860s and she married Neil Campbell, a merchant, on 18 October 1877 at her parents’ home at Swift Creek, Tapanui.
They had eight children and they ran a store at Hampden, north of Dunedin, where Mary signed the suffrage petition.

In the 1890s the family moved to Springburn near Ashburton to take up farming.
Neil died there in 1902 and Mary died at her son’s home at Raikaia on 9 November 1935, they are buried together in the Ashburton Cemetery.
