Kororāreka painting, 1845

Kororāreka (Russell) in the Bay of Islands

This view of Kororāreka from the Bay was drawn by Captain Clayton on 10 March 1845, the day before the town was attacked by the forces of Hōne Heke and Kawiti. The ships in the foreground are the Hazard, Victoria and Matilda. The contested flagstaff can be seen at left atop Maiki Hill.

My Great Grandfather was Robert Hattaway who was a Colour Sergeant in the 58th Regiment. I located his diary of the Northern Campaign in the Auckland library(one of 3 diary's of the Northern War). His photo is in the book"To Face the Daring Maoris"
